Wood Badge Course: NE-V-126 OWL Patrol

Last modified on : 02-Oct-2007 18:23

On the weekend of September 12, 1998, the following Scouters met during their first weekend session of Wood Badge and were assigned the task of forming the OWL Patrol,
of Otetiana Council's NE-V-126 Wood Badge course.

Chris Bjorling, Doug Cunningham, Dan Evans, Ken Ruschak,
John Van Griethuysen, Norm Wright, Paul Marone (PL)

The Coach Counselor assigned to the Owl Patrol is David Dilgard , who became a trusted friend to all of us.
We do not think that we could of made it through this course without his often sought after keen insight.

This Page is Dedicated to our Coach Counselor: Dave Dilgard
and to all the Staff of Wood Badge Course # NE-V-126

These pages are the collection of things that we saw, learned or wrote.

Material Available on page 2.

The time has come, the Snowy Owl said, to speak of many things,
Of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings,
Of why the sea is boiling hot, and whether pigs have wings,
Of how this home has got too big, and takes an hour to load,
And why a menu should be made, and many pages added,
One for each topic on this site, that's now like an endless road.

Some famous quotes from :

Lord Baden-Powell.

"I believe that God put us in this jolly world to be happy and enjoy life. Happiness doesn't come from being rich, nor merely in being successful in your career, nor by self-indulgence. One step toward happiness is to make yourself healthy and strong while you are a boy, so that you can be useful and enjoy life when you are a man."

Rudyard Kipling.

"Who hath smelt the Wood-Smoke at twilight?
Who hath heard the Birch-Logs Burning?
Who is Quick to read the Noises of the Night?
Let follow with the others, for the young man's feet are turning
to the camps of proved desire and known delight!"

A Scout is Reverent

Wood Badge Hymn, a celebration of the Wood Badge totems,
Written for a Scouts Own service put on by the NE-V-126, OWL Patrol.
Written by Dan Evans, Troop 207, Fairport, N.Y.

Sing to the tune of 'Zulu Warrior,' but with no refrain.
This may be done as a repeat song if scripts are not available for all participants.

There he goes, the working Beaver, there he swims, across the lake.
There he goes, on toward the aspens, paddling on, with silent wake.

There he goes, the quiet Bobwhite, there he flies, back to his nest.
There he goes, among the fall leaves, walking on, with bobbing crest.

There he goes, the Golden Eagle, there he sails, up in the sky.
There he goes, beside the mountain, flying on, with haunting cry.

There he goes, the wily Red Fox, there he trots, among the trees.
There he goes, across the meadow, head up in, the evening breeze.

There he goes, the Great Horned Owl, there he flies, on silent wing.
There he goes, above the campfire, gliding on, as Scouters sing.

There he goes, the hungry Black Bear, leaving now, his winter home.
There he goes, among the boulders, wondering where, he next will roam.

There he goes, the shaggy Buffalo, grazing on, the sweet spring grass.
There he goes, across the prairie, thundering on, and through the pass.

There he goes, the bounding Antelope, there he runs, across the plains.
There he goes, among the wildflowers, soaking up, the summer rains.

There they go, our Wood Badge totems, there they go, 'cross hill and dale,
There they go, our woodland brothers, leading on, to mark the trail.

May we see, in them our Maker, may we find, through them our way.
May we be, much better Scouters, may we reach, a peaceful day.

"In My Dreams I'm Going Back to Gilwell "
by Ralph Reader

In my dreams I'm going back to Gilwell,
To the joys and the happiness I found On those grand week-ends
With my dear old friends and see the training ground.
Oh the grass is greener back in Gilwell,
And I breathe again that Scouting air,
While in memory, I see B.P.
Who never will be far from there.

I found a site that has a few Wood Badge Songs on it.
It's called "Grant's Scouting Resources" . The URL is:
http://salsa.iinet.net.au/~oneilg/scouts/songs/gilwell.html
I was impressed by the story that went with the tune listed above.
Anyone that has attended Wood Badge is urged to go there and read it for yourself .
If you can not go to that site , Here is what Grant O'Neil of Ballajura,Australia wrote about this song:

"This song is traditionally sung towards the end of the campfire at Gilwell Reunion.
At the reunions I have attended, it has been sung through, then is hummed quietly while
the campfire leader lists the years that Woodbadge courses have been conducted,
and those who attended training in that year stand. After all the years have been listed,
everyone joins in singing the song again."

I liked this tune so much I had to share it with anyone that finds this site.
