From the U. S. Scouting Service Project, Inc.
Mr. D's Merit Badge Review of All of the BSA Merit Badges is a good read!

As changes were made to ALL the Required badges Sometime since 1999,
you need to verify that the badge (booklet) that you are planning work on is up to the current requirements.

As of 2001:
SAFETY was replaced with PERSONAL FITNESS
Alternatives for SWIMMING are now : HIKING OR CYCLING.
SPORTS & PERSONAL FITNESS ARE no longer an Alternative for SWIMMING.
On that note, SPORTS and SAFETY are no longer required badges.

In order to stay "current and up to date", we refer you to two other websites that maintain their splendid data base of every merit badge including the required merit badges. Because the Scouters that maintain those sites spend quite a bit of time keeping all of their information current and up to date, it would be wise to provide links to their sites, rather than replicate their hard work and risk copyright infringement (A Scout is Trustworthy). Even worse we would run the risk of showing out of date (wrong) material to our Scouts and cause them not to do the right requirements for these needed badges.
